According to Loren, a widespread issue that women face when it comes to their appearance is not knowing how to dress in a way that is flattering for their body type. This can have a negative impact on self-confidence which subsequently stifles a woman’s growth in every facet of life – be it socially, professionally and even romantically.
Loren, who owns the company StyleByLoren sat down with us to reveal her styling tips on how to dress for your body type.
Can you tell us a bit about your company StyleByLoren and the services that you offer?
Style By Loren is a business that offers image and fashion related services. My aim is to use the power of fashion to empower and equip women.
I offer a personal shopping experience in which I teach women how to shop smart and select clothing that is flattering for their body type and complexion.
Then with the wardrobe styling, I equip them to maximize what they already have in their closet. I never want to have to take a client shopping because I believe that what you already have is what you utelise in the long run. So it’s all about re-purposing different items.
In order to maximize the items in your closet and shop for the ‘right’ clothing, it’s important to first understand the basics – that is, to KNOW YOUR BODY TYPE. There are 5 basic body types that women fall into, which Loren likes to call a fruit basket:
Pear (triangle) – Your hips are wider than your shoulders.
Strawberry (wedge) – Your chest and shoulders are wider than your waist and hips.
Banana (straight) – Your waist, hips and shoulder widths are similar.
Apple (round) – Most of your weight is above the hips.
Peanut (hourglass) – The widths of your shoulders and hips are proportional.
You can use celebrity images to identify your body type as well as what clothing styles will be flattering for your figure.
Colour can be used to create balance and symmetry on our bodies. It is a great way to manipulate the eye so that it is drawn towards or away from certain body parts. The first thing to consider when wearing colour is what parts of your body you want to conceal and what parts you’d like to accentuate. Know what you are uncomfortable with and then build from there.
This is how women of different body types can wear colour:
Pear: Light coloured tops and dark bottoms.
Strawberry: Wear bright colours on the bottom such as white and light denims.
Banana: Make use of brightly coloured belts or waistbands, as well as colourful jewellery or ruching at the neckline to create the illusion of curves.
Apple: Wear darker colours on top to draw attention away from your mid-section and create the illusion of a longer torso.
Peanut: A single, solid colour is the most flattering for your figure as it shows off your curves and keeps your bust evenly balanced with your hips.
Oftentimes, shorter girls feel like they can’t get away with as much compared to their tall and slender counterparts as it is easy to look frumpy and be overwhelmed in a garment.
Use these tips and tricks to create the illusion of height:
Every time you get dressed, you should have a clear goal in mind as to the illusion you’d like to create for your body. This will be your guide when putting outfits together.
Pear: Emphasise your waist and arms, add volume to your shoulders and upper body.
Strawberry: Accentuate your lower body while softening your shoulders and upper body.
Banana: Create curves and show off your legs and arms.
Apple: Elongate your torso and show off your legs.
Peanut: Show off your curves and accentuate balance.
Of course, women of each body type have misconceptions about what they believe they are or are not allowed to wear.
Loren clears up some common misconceptions that she’s had to deal with:
NB: These tips and tricks are just to guide you and help those who have zero clue where to start! But if you are happy and comfortable then wear whatever colour, style and cut you want!
